Doula Support

What is a Doula?

A doula provides continuous support for women, couples or families, through pregnancy, birth and the immediate postnatal time. They offer support for all kinds of birth choices, from planned caesarean births to home water births. The services offered can vary greatly according to the needs of the woman, couple or family that she is working with.

Doulas do not take on a clinical role or advise, but can support a woman to find balanced information to make informed decisions about her maternity care.

A doula usually meets with potential clients for an informal interview before being booked. This gives both the clients and doula the opportunity to see that they feel comfortable and compatible with each other.

Some doulas work as both birth and postnatal doulas, while others work only as a birth doula or postnatal doula.

I work as both a birth doula and postnatal doula.

Birth Doulas

Antenatally I would arrange to meet with you at least twice and be available by phone and email to support you with any questions or concerns which may arise. I am here to listen and support you in working out your preferences for your birth plan and the time to get to know each other.

Around 38 weeks into your pregnancy I go “on call” and will be available 24 hours a day. I will come when requested by you to be there to support you through your birth.

During birth

I provide emotional and practical support adapting to what your needs are. Offering suggestions on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. I am there to nurture you, offer continuous support and reassurance and stay with you until after baby is born and you are settled and happy.

Immediate Postnatal Period

During the immediate postnatal period I will visit you at least once to support you as you settle into life with your new baby, help with infant feeding as needed and allow time for an opportunity to talk over your birth.

Birth doula support package: £800

Postnatal Doulas

As a postnatal doula, I offer emotional, practical and informative support. Giving you as a new mum the opportunity and space to talk about your birth and how you are feeling.

We would discuss the practical support that would be appropriate to you for example helping around the house with simple household tasks, making meals, looking after baby while you relax, have bath or a sleep, and support in establishing feeding whichever method you choose.

Postnatal support can be arranged antenatally or within the first few months after birth and can last a week or a few months depending on what your needs are.

Postnatal doula fees: £15 per hour
